Birchbox Review: November

To be honest, I was a little underwhelmed when I first opened my Birchbox in November. But, as the saying goes, don't judge a book by its' cover... don't judge your Birchbox until you've had a chance to try everything. I ended up loving the Not Soap, Radio and Dr. Lipp! Even reordered some more Not Soap, Radio because their array of scents were amazing! (I purchased Liquid Freud in case you're interested...)

Dr. Lipp - Original Nipple Balm for Lips $14.50 - Let's face it. Nipple cream is amazing. I discovered this lip remedy ohhh almost 3 years ago and when I saw that my Mom received it in her Birchbox earlier this year I was jelly. This stuff is great, although my feedback is that it's so great for chapped lips that you don't really want to touch it.. kind of greasy on the fingers, but it's not for fingers right? Love it.

Fekkai - PrX Reparatives Intense Fortifying Masque $25

Gilchrist & Soames - Spa Therapy Body Lotion $15

Laura Mercier - Longwear Creme Eye Pencil in Violet $24 - I'm not really an eyeliner kind of gal but this color is so pretty.

Not Soap, Radio - Awash in a field of four leaf clovers Body Wash $16

Have I inspired you to give Birchbox a try? Did I also mention that they make great (and easy) gifts?

Where to start.

Writer's block, decision fatigue, work, the holidays, renovation realities - the list could go on. And also all legitimate reasons why the content on my blog has been suffering lately. And also the last I'll allow myself the excuses. I gave myself time to rest mentally but decided today that I just had to start again. I had a really hard time just getting a start to type this post. But here I am. So now that I've felt all of the things above - how do I get my groove back? As a writer, a maker, a content creator I know you've all been there. For me, I'm not motivated to make money with this blog. I'd be well below the poverty line if that was my goal. It really has been a wonderful creative and social outlet for me, but when I've got a lot going on, I really have to consciously recharge those creative juices and sometimes, unfortunately I guess, I tend to withdraw (to Soda Crush). But again, here I am. Hopefully I've broken through the ice.

Black Friday Weekend: Best of online

Personally, I love Black Friday/Cyber Monday Weekend. That name doesn't even really make sense but you know what I mean. Marketing teams across the US (and beyond) flex their marketing muscles and bring out the deals. If you know me, you must know by now that my shopping habits are not old school so you'll never see me out at 2am on Black Friday. Instead, I'm that last minute Lucy who's trying to cash in on Black Friday deals at 11:30pm on Cyber Monday. I digress... here are some awesome deals that I'm excited about from some of my favorite brands! Totally taking advantage of the first one here... 25% off at Honest Company. It's where I buy all of our eco/baby friendly cleaning supplies and bath products for Grace.

Tiny Dancer

I have a toddler with a penchant for tutus and high heels. Last night as soon as she walked through the door she "greeted me" with the following demand: "Put on my Rapunzel dress."

Grace, you're cute, but a "May I please wear my Rapunzel dress" is in order.

She now has a collection of about five costume dress-up dresses that live only in our house. In other words, she can't wear them out of the house and demands to put one on as soon as she walks through the door. I know it's only a phase, but this one is intense! You don't want to see what happens when Grace can't put on a dress.

Next on my to do list is to put furniture pads on the heels of my shoes so the click-clacking doesn't throw my husband into a floor protection rant (to me) every time.

No Carb Cheddar Mashed Cauliflower

'Tis the season for slow roasting on Sundays! As previously chronicled a few weeks ago with a post-roasted chicken feature involving a chicken soup, we were at it again this Sunday with another delicious roasted chicken using Ina Garten's Perfect Roast Chicken Recipe - I highly recommend it! My husband started a new diet recently and has been seriously cutting back on carbs. While Grace and I are proceeding "full carb ahead", or at least not excluding them entirely, we've enjoyed some of his no carb options as well.

Last night, in addition to the chicken and carrots, onions, and fennel that are included with the recipe, I also tried my hand at Cheddar Cauliflower Mashed "Potatoes". They were delicious. The recipe I linked to here was followed loosely, as I have a difficult time "just following the damn directions" as my husband says. Here was the gist of my approach:

  • Steam or boil chopped cauliflower for approx. 6 minutes
  • Drain and try to get out as much water as possible
  • Add cauliflower, 1 TBSP cream cheese, 1/4c parmesan cheese, 1 TBSP chicken broth, black pepper to taste to food processor (or blender in my case)
  • Puree (or puree most of the cauliflower, but leave some chunks to mash if you should so desire.)
  • Finally, top with cheddar cheese. (The recipe called for additional bacon, butter, and chives but I left these out and they were still delicious!)

How to Punch Up Your Look with a Touch of Pink

I love wearing black. This is no secret. I've actually warmed up to incorporating more color into my wardrobe lately, but still when I dress up, black is my go-to color of choice. I feel like it's the perfect palette to punch up a look with fun patterns and colors like you see below:

Like this set on Polyvore.

Would you wear it?

Happy Halloween!

Truth: I am not a lover of "the Halloween". It's not that I have anything against it, I just never really got into the spooky decor, dressing up like something dead, or even really the candy. I think I was into it when I was a kid... but of course now I can't remember.

Anyway, now that I have a toddler I am excited for her to experience Halloween. She loves costumes and dressing up, the idea of going to random people's houses and of course - candy! So tonight we'll go out and she'll trick or treat in our new(ish) neighborhood and have a grand ol'time!

I'm still not committing to fully dressing up though. Below is about as Halloween as I get!

Christmas is Coming!

Christmas is coming and for some reason I felt compelled to find Grace the perfect set of flannel pajamas. Partly due to the fact she's been super jealous of my leopard pajamas of late and partly due to the fact that I think they look adorable on Toddlers during the holiday season.

Pottery Barn Kids Red Flannel Pajamas
Find these adorable jammies here.
I choose red and not to personalize for the sake of hand-me downs (and the fact that these damn toddlers grow like weeds). But the best part guys... are you ready - ON SALE and an additional 15% off! Here's a code you can use: QCPV-GGV9-3DL3 Ends tonight unfortunately!

And as always, Pottery Barn Kids isn't paying me to say this. But they should. Because their emails are so damn tempting.

An Awesome Chicken Soup Recipe for Cold Season

Chicken soup is the old standby for comfort food during cold season. And for good reason- It's helping you recover from those nasty cold viruses! Last week I found an awesome Chicken Noodle Soup Recipe for Cold Season.

Chicken Noodle Soup for Colds

In fact, my household is currently in recovery mode from the latest early season cold. When my husband first fell ill last weekend I took to Google to find a recipe to make chicken soup with the leftover roasted chicken from the night before. What I found was the perfect recipe for our ailing household! Now, one week later I'm sick in bed as I type this post, wishing I froze some of the stock!

Easy Chicken Noodle Soup from a Leftover Roasted Chicken recipe from Chow.com

Try it out and let me know how it works for you! The old modification I made was to add a little extra Kosher salt since most of the from scratch chicken soups I make taste a little bland.

The old adage: Starve a Fever, Feed a Cold? Well it's true. Eat healthy, nutrient-rich foods during a cold will help you recover faster. Where did I confirm this? How Stuff Works of course! (love that site - and podcast!)

A scientific study confirms that one of the best things to eat when you have a cold is a nice steaming bowl of chicken soup. University of Nebraska Medical Center researcher Dr. Stephen Rennard analyzed several chicken soup recipes, including his grandmother's, and found that the popular comfort food had anti-inflammatory properties. In particular, chicken soup reduced the movement of neutrophils, the white blood cells whose activity in the upper respiratory tract can cause the congestion and other symptoms that we associate with colds. 5 Tips to Kick Your Closet Into Shape

As a woman, how important is a closet? As something you interact with every single day, it's pretty important right? What if with a little planning you can kick your closet into shape and reduce your closet anxiety, find more things to wear and not have to worry on laundry day when you need to cram your wardrobe back into place...
Kick Your Closet Into Shape
Kick Your Closet Into Shape

My first instinct was to call this post: Melissa and the Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Closet, but changed my mind for SEO purposes. Other post titles that crossed my mind were: Is Your Closet Taking Years Off Your Life? Or My Closet is Trying to Kill Me. You get the point.

Size Doesn't Matter (that much)

The good news (for me anyway!) is that my closet size issue is about to be fixed in less than 3 months. However, I'm smart enough to know that it's not the size of your closet that determines your happiness in life. Remember that one. It's really not. I had a huge closet at my last house and while I didn't have the "jam everything in after all the laundry is done in the house" anxiety, I still had the "I have nothing to wear" anxiety.

Fix The Problem

So what's a girl to do? Whether you have a tiny closet space, or space is not an issue, I've found some really helpful resources that should please everyone. My approach comes down to these basic principles.
1.You've got to love it. ♥ (Get rid of the rest)
2. Get the right tools. (Maximize the value of your space with helpful dividers, baskets and bins)
3. Make it pretty. (Add some personal details through color to make you smile each time you open that closet - color hangers? Or one step further and hang your clothes by color!)
4. Get rid of the shoeboxes! (Want to add some real estate to your closet? Get rid of the boxes, trust me)
5. Evaluate (Continually evaluate the contents of your closet each season)

Leaf & Love Organic Lemonade Review

When Leaf & Love contacted me to take part in a review of their organic, zero-sugar lemonade juice box I jumped on board. As a Mom, one of the most frustrating thing about toddler-hood is how much SUGAR is in everything. Especially juice. As it stands right now Grace loves juice, but I barely let her drink it because her poor little baby teeth don't need all that sugar.

Leaf and Love Review

What is Leaf & Love Organic Lemonade?
Leaf & Love Lemonade is the world’s first all natural, zero-sugar, organic lemonade “juice box” for kids. Made in California with just a handful of ingredients, Leaf & Love Organic Lemonade delivers all the flavor of a sweet and tangy lemonade with the added benefits of being sweetened with organic, all natural stevia and providing 15% of the daily recommended amount of Vitamin C. Source: Leaf & Love™ FAQ

So how did my 2 year old like her no-sugar juice box? "Mmm Mommy this is good!" She loved it! I had a taste too and while it definitely doesn't taste like the lemonade we're used to (because it has so much sugar), it was still good. The stevia does make it sweet, it's just a different taste compared to regular sweeteners. I'm super picky about weird sugar flavors so if I'm ok with it you probably will be too!

Now here's your chance to give it a try! Enter to win an 8 pack of Leaf and Love Lemonade Juice Boxes. Easy Entry options!

Sunday Funday... Sore on Monday

We had a wonderful weekend. Well Sunday was wonderful! Saturday was Day 5 or 6 of rain and it played out with a nap refusal, followed by a trip to the mall with husband and toddler in tow.

Sunday was spent in full birthday party glory in the shining sun! I forgot it could do that! But then again, I have a serious hang up with the weather and the combination of a few straight days of rain + diminishing daylight hours is really bad for my Seasonal Affective Disorder psyche. But don't worry folks, I got my Vitamin D fix yesterday.

Now that Grace is just over 2 1/2 she is now able to participate in Open Bounce House Season. Unfortunately for her, she was old enough at the tail end of it this year, as Open Bounce House Season lasts from about May-October. May-October, aka the Golden Season for being born, means you have the potential to convince your parents to order up a Bounce House for your birthday party. If you've been unfortunate (like me) to be born from November-April, you are doomed to a life of indoor parties at bowling alleys, museums, and Chuck E. Cheese. For those of us born from mid-December - mid-March, we have an extra level of anxiety to work with - SNOW CANCELLATIONS*. Poor Grace. She's right in the thick of snow threat.

*Remember, I live in New England.

But I digress, the real reason for my post was to enforce this motto to my fellow parents (ahem, Dads...)

Sunday Funday... Sore on Monday.
That's gonna leave a mark.
Bounce Houses are fun, but you're not 5 anymore. Take care of that neck!

We asked Grace what she wanted painted on her face. Her answer: Batman
