Not quite ready for Disney? Sesame Place was a great alternative.

In August we packed up the kids (a 4 year/1 year old) and the grandparents and headed to Langhorne, PA for a fun-filled family vacation to Sesame Place.

Leaving from Rhode Island in the wee hours of the morning, the trip took around 4h 30m with one rest stop. Thanks to my small state mentality, before I actually looked into it, I could have sworn that Sesame Place was going to be a much longer drive but it really was quite manageable!

We booked a room at the Sheraton Bucks County, a great option for several reasons but chief among them- location and a free shuttle to the park! When looking at hotels in the area, consider a hotel that offers a shuttle (there are a few) so you can save the parking fee AND get dropped off on the doorstep.

Here’s another pro-tip for you AAA members… book your tickets at AAA.com for a killer deal! We got tickets that offered a buy one, get one day free and lunch vouchers for less than the cost of the at -gate price for 1 ticket.

Do yourself a favor and research your ticket options before you go!

Once inside, we admittedly hadn’t done our homework so we grabbed a map and were lured to the first ride we saw, a kind of big roller coaster. Grace went on it with her Dad and Grandfather and wasn’t too impressed. A little intense for a four year old perhaps. Luckily the line wasn’t too long - probably because the day was extremely hot and humid! Which leads us to our next stop - Count’s Splash Castle. We suited up and claimed some lounge chairs - we had a giant double stroller with us so 1 adult was usually manning the stroller.

I’ve heard that the water rides at Sesame are best experienced first thing when the park opens (not until 10am so you late risers don’t have to fret). We, of course, didn’t head this advice so meandered around the park without much of a strategy. That will work too, but in the middle of the day you will wait in some pretty long lines for most of the water rides.

We found that two days was the perfect amount of time at the park. We were able to experience all of the rides, the character meet and greets, show, and the parade. We had a really great time as a family - from our one year old, all the way up to the grandparents, it was an enjoyable experience for everyone.

A weekend at Sesame Place made me realize that a week at Disney might be a little too hot to handle for my family at this stage. With Sesame, we were able to test those waters and walk away unscathed!
